Cordless vs. Corded Robot Pool Cleaners: Which to Buy

If you've already decided a robot is cleaning your pool and you're just choosing a model, there's a second decision hiding inside the first one: cord or no cord. It's separate from the suction-vs-pressure-vs-robotic question we cover in our pool robots category guide. This one is about power delivery, and it changes how the robot behaves in your specific pool.

Corded robotic cleaners

Corded models plug into a standard outlet through a power supply that converts the current to a low-voltage DC signal before it reaches the robot. That's an important distinction: you're not dropping mains voltage into the pool. The cord carries safe low-voltage power to the unit, and the transformer box sits on the deck, away from the water.

The upside of that setup is consistent power. A corded cleaner isn't rationing energy against a battery gauge, so it can run a full cleaning cycle, sometimes two or three hours, at steady strength without slowing down or cutting out early. For anyone who wants the robot to finish the entire pool floor and walls in one pass, that reliability matters.

The tradeoff is the cord itself. You're managing 30, 40, sometimes 60 feet of cable coiling behind the robot as it moves, and it can snag on ladders, drains, or your own feet if you're poolside during a cycle. Most decent units include a swivel connector to cut down on tangling, but it's not eliminated entirely. And because you're pairing an electrical device with a body of water, the safety basics aren't optional: use a GFCI-protected outlet, inspect the cord and connections for damage before each use, and never plug in or unplug the unit with wet hands or while standing in water. Manufacturers design these systems to be safe when used as intended. The risk shows up when a cord is frayed, an outlet isn't GFCI-protected, or someone gets careless around the connection point.

Cordless robotic cleaners

Cordless models run on a rechargeable battery, which removes the cord problem entirely. Nothing to coil, nothing to snag, nothing between you and the pool while it's running. That freedom of movement is the whole appeal, and for pools with a lot of steps, tight corners, or built-in features like tanning ledges, it can mean better coverage than a corded unit dragging its cable around the same obstacles.

The cost of that freedom is runtime. Battery-powered cleaners typically run 60 to 90 minutes per charge, which is often enough for a smaller or moderately sized pool but may fall short for a larger one, forcing you to run a cycle, recharge, and run again to cover the whole pool. Battery capacity also fades with age and charge cycles, the same way it does in a phone or a cordless drill, so the cleaner that ran 90 minutes in year one might only manage 60 by year three. Replacement batteries exist for most models, but they're a real ongoing cost that a corded unit never asks you to pay.

How to actually decide

Skip the idea that one type is objectively better. The right pick depends on three things about your own setup:

  • Pool size relative to runtime. A battery that covers your pool in one charge is a non-issue. A battery that needs two or three charge cycles to finish the job stops feeling convenient fast. Measure your pool against the manufacturer's stated runtime, not just the battery capacity number.
  • How much you mind managing a cord. Some owners genuinely don't notice a cord trailing behind the robot. Others find it a constant irritation, especially if they're in and around the pool while it runs. Be honest about which camp you're in before you buy.
  • How often you actually clean. A pool that gets cleaned daily or every other day benefits more from a corded unit's consistent full-strength runs. A pool that only needs a cleaning once a week or so can usually get by fine on a cordless unit's shorter cycles, since there's less debris to clear in any single pass.

If you've got a large pool, clean it often, and don't mind a cord on the deck, corded is the practical choice. If your pool is small to mid-sized, you clean on a lighter schedule, and you'd rather never think about a cable again, cordless earns its premium.
