Robot Pool Cleaners Explained: Suction, Pressure, and Robotic
Suction-side, pressure-side, and robotic pool cleaners work differently and cost differently. Here's how each one actually moves and filters debris.

"Pool cleaner" gets used as if it's one product. It isn't. Suction-side, pressure-side, and fully robotic cleaners solve the same problem, keeping a pool floor and walls free of debris, using three unrelated mechanisms. The type you end up with changes what equipment you need, how much you'll do by hand, and what happens when something breaks. None of them is a scam and none of them is magic. They're just different machines wearing the same marketing label.
Suction-side cleaners: borrowing your pump's suction
A suction-side cleaner plugs into your pool's existing plumbing, either the skimmer or a dedicated suction port, and rides the pull of your pool pump. The pump draws water (and whatever the cleaner has picked up) through the cleaner and back into your filtration system. The cleaner itself has no motor of its own for filtration. Its job is just to move around the pool and stir debris into the suction stream, using the pump's pull to both propel it and vacuum through it.
That dependence on your existing pump is the entire story with suction-side units. They're generally the cheapest cleaners on the market because they don't need their own motor or filter, but they're only as good as the pump and filter already installed. A weak pump means weak suction means a cleaner that leaves debris behind. And because everything the cleaner picks up runs through your main filter, you're cleaning that filter more often, not a separate bag.
Pressure-side cleaners: pushed, not pulled
Pressure-side cleaners flip the mechanism. Instead of connecting to a suction line, they connect to your pool's return line, the pressurized side where filtered water gets pushed back into the pool. Some pools have enough pressure on the return line to run one directly; others need a dedicated booster pump added just to drive the cleaner. That water pressure spins an internal turbine that both moves the unit around the pool and drives debris into an onboard bag or canister the cleaner carries with it.
Because debris goes into the cleaner's own bag instead of your main filter, a pressure-side cleaner takes real load off your pool's filtration system, which matters if your filter is already working hard or you deal with heavy leaf debris. The tradeoff is more equipment: a hose, the cleaner itself, sometimes a booster pump, and a bag that needs emptying regularly or it stops picking up anything new.
Fully robotic cleaners: their own machine, start to finish
Robotic pool cleaners don't connect to your pool's plumbing at all. Each one is a self-contained unit with its own motor, its own pump, and its own filter, running on a low-voltage cable to a power supply that sits poolside. Drop it in, and it moves, vacuums, and filters entirely on its own, independent of whatever pump or filtration your pool already has.
That independence is why robotic cleaners are generally the most capable option and consistently the most expensive. They don't care how strong your existing pump is because they're not borrowing it. Many climb walls and the waterline, something suction- and pressure-side units generally can't do well. The cost of that capability is a filter that's entirely yours to clean: rinsing or replacing internal filter cartridges after most runs, on top of the higher purchase price up front.
The differences that actually matter when you're shopping
Once you strip away the marketing, the real questions are the same four every time:
- Energy use: suction- and pressure-side cleaners ride your pool pump's existing energy draw, adding little on top. Robotic units run their own motor independently, which adds directly to your power bill, though usually for a shorter cycle since they clean faster and more thoroughly.
- Independence from existing equipment: a suction-side cleaner is only as good as your current pump and filter. A pressure-side cleaner may need a booster pump you don't already have. A robotic cleaner needs neither, it works the same whether your pool's circulation system is old or new, strong or weak.
- Debris capacity: suction-side units are limited by your main filter's capacity and get worse as it fills. Pressure-side units carry their own bag, decent capacity but finite. Robotic units generally carry the largest internal filter of the three and handle the heaviest debris loads best.
- Maintenance routine: suction-side means cleaning your main pool filter more often. Pressure-side means emptying a bag. Robotic means rinsing or swapping a cartridge filter, the most hands-on of the three, but also the only one not tied to your pool's overall filtration workload.
None of these is the objectively correct choice. A suction-side cleaner is a reasonable answer for a pool with a strong pump and light, regular debris. A pressure-side cleaner earns its keep when a pool's main filter is already strained by leaves or heavy use. A robotic cleaner earns its price when you want a machine that doesn't depend on anything else in the pool working correctly, and you're willing to pay for that independence and clean its filter yourself.
